A newly discovered self portrait by Leonardo da Vinci will make its debut right here in Williamsburg this month at the Muscarelle Museum on the College of William and Mary.

The piece, recently verified to be of da Vinci’s own hand, will be among a collection of his work coming to the campus of the College of William & Mary in February.

The Show, Titled “Leonardo da Vinci and the Idea of Beauty,” will only host venues in Williamsburg and the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston.

The exhibition will include more than 25 drawings by da Vinci, including his sketches in Codex on the Flight of Birds, which was cited as inspiration for the Wright brothers. Within the codex is the self-portrait of da Vinci at age 53, hidden behind his characteristic script from right to left.

The theme for the show, which puts emphasis on da Vinci’s ideas of appearance rather than his study of machines, is one that has never been done before.

Guests to the museum will see the original piece, as well as a photoshopped image that removes the writing over the portrait. Technology will also allow guests to electronically flip through the entire codex while viewing entries.

Taking center stage in the show is da Vinci’s drawing “Study for the Face of an Angel,” a delicate piece to go alongside the drawings selected.

Creations from Michelangelo will also appear in the exhibition so guests can compare their styles.

“Leonardo da Vinci and the Idea of Beauty” will be at the Muscarelle from Feb. 21 through April 5 .
