Historic Jamestown Settlement

January 24th, 2011 by wdtp

Jamestown Settlement

Located right down the street, just a short 4 mile drive, you will find Jamestown Settlement. This wonderful historic settlement portrays the story  of over 400 years ago.

A Group of 104 English men and boys began a settlement on the banks of Virginia’s James River.  These men were sponsored by the Virginia Company of London, whose stockholders had planned to make a profit from the resources of the New World. These men suffered horrible hardships but managed to survive and earn the distinction of being America’s first permanent English Colony.

Today at Jamestown Settlement, the story is told. You will enjoy a stroll through the Powhatan Indian village where you can interact with the Indians, skin the hides and enter their homes. Walk down the path and board the replica of the three ships that sailed from England to Virginia in 1607, and then enjoy life-size re-creations of the colonists’ fort. Costumed historical interpreters describe and demonstrate daily life in the early 17th century.  A exquisite museum offers expansive gallery exhibits.

After touring the Settlement you can enjoy lunch at their cafe and stop in the gift shop for some souveniers to take home.

Jamestown is open daily except for Christmas and New Years Day.
